As part of our Annual General meeting, held on 22 November 2022, we had a Zoom discussion with David Cannings, the Chief Finance Officer of Wesley Mission.
Wesley Mission is interested in the possibility of having a development on the Uniting Church’s site in Curtin which would integrate MyHome with units of affordable rental housing. From the perspective of Wesley Mission, this would draw on its extensive experience in providing services and housing in a new and promising way, and contribute to its strategic objectives in a new ACT context.
From the perspective of the ACT Government, such an integrated development could fulfil its commitment to implementing the MyHome project while also being a pioneer project under its policy of re‑purposing land zoned for community facilities to provide affordable rental housing.
From the perspective of the Uniting Church, this would be a most attractive possibility, potentially strengthening both the affordable rental and supported housing elements of the project, provided a development proposal can be formulated which satisfies the Church and other interested parties.
And from the perspective of the MyHome in Canberra association, an integrated development now seems the best way of reaching our objective, although there is much to be done by both Wesley Mission and ourselves, working with ACT Government agencies and others, to formulate a fully acceptable proposal.
